I never would, it was a great experience, but it was not always easy. I couldnt get enough of [00:01:00] that. We have, eight hours a week total and we get four on the, on the court, out of season. And so, because we, we press, we press for 40 minutes, we play really up-tempo, were in unbelievable shape. That maybe some, some kids arent that way, you know, like, I definitely think Im a self driven person, but I think my dad had a lot to do with that because he kind of planted the seeds of like, Hey, Im not going to go very far unless I work hard unless I work really hard now, as time went on, he was able to step away and I became the guy pushing myself, you know, and I dont think he, he was over the top, but I think he definitely, you know, there was [00:11:00] times that, you know, I think I heard some of Steve offered to Id come home and. We had, we had a really good time and, and he enjoyed, we enjoyed coaching together. I just, I wanted to play. So I was like, I was there. Despite getting their season delayed until January, then enduring a COVID-19 outbreak shortly almost immediately, they haven't missed their stride. Like youve done. And, you know, my dad was a high school coach for 30 some years, and I think the advantage of being a high school coach, sometimes you get, you have more time with your, with your players. I mean, yeah, Im not sure with scouting. Tobin Anderson: [00:10:00] Yeah, thats a great, thats a great question because, you know, we did it, we probably didnt do it the perfect way we were, you know, my dad and I, we didnt, we didnt, we came home from practice and it wasnt like we stopped being. We were, we were close, but its still its at the end of the day, its his program. I think guys really respond to film, especially during the season. usually, so yeah, thats, thats the biggest thing. So, thats probably the biggest challenge going forward to that next step and this sustain. And he got a chance to work with them every, every day and spend time teaching them and in stations in and things like that. And so that was great and once I knew that I couldnt go on and play at [00:04:00] a really high level, I knew coaching was the Avenue. Now, all of a sudden. Both coaches and players at the division one level and see how everybody kind of feels about it. you miss maybe a little more, you know, as a CNA, you go play at Georgia tech or youd go play. Does it start with a team meeting where you talk about these are the pillars of the program? So I want to start out by going back to talking about when you were a player with your dad, and we all know that that situation, when you have a father, son coaching situation, can. Garf was a, was a tremendous mentor to me throughout my whole life. So mostly, tons of guys out of DC that have been really good for us that have come from great programs. And, and we were great friends the whole way through. You know, for guys like him, you know, if our guys feel comfortable with it, with the guy in front, weve had a couple of guys that recruits came up and our players like coach, hes not our kind of guy, you know, and said, its just not our, not our kind of person. And a lot of times, you know, you can, you can tell guys theyll rise to the occasion and play really well against good players or guys who cant handle that kind of competition. There's a lot of potential there, but there's a lot of work to do.". Those are the kind of guys were looking for. Of course division two and Ive coached division one. So Ive had quite a journey, you know, from Iowa to Maine, to, to Connecticut, to now in New York, you know, and the five star camp I was living around, you know, I was with the camp with Ron, Artest and Elton Brand, and LeBron James was a sophomore there. Absolutely. How, how hard do they want to be pushed? I mean, I know as a player, you get a lot, I got a lot better by actually being in the games and playing as opposed to sitting on the bench. Yeah, it was, it was awesome. And I was able to make some mistakes and learn and get better. I dont think, I dont think were that far away, but were not there yet. The dates like [00:54:00] September 28th. We have a slogan, 'One percent.' a new program and get guys excited about what were doing. My dad was a great coach. and now its, I think Ive matured, right? Its, its a, its a, its a, you know, you do do the best you can with the best information you have and, and, you work hard and see what happens. Yeah, its a great point because when I went back to be a hit to an assistant and I thought that wouldnt be that hard. And then obviously the, the off the court stuff, is he a good kid? Can go multiple ways, both in terms of the relationship between the father and the son, and then the other players on the team and whatever. Yeah, and you can still do it, but it becomes a lot more difficult sales job when the losses are piling up. Like, what was it, what was the problems there? You know, we got wake up in the morning. He is averaging 10.1ppg over the 11-game stretch and 11.7 in his last seven. Mike Klinzing: [01:22:41] Theres no doubt. I think what you said is a great point. When you started to really shift your mindset from playing to coaching in a sense of while you were in college and you were playing, were you starting to think like a coach prepare like a coach, starting to take notes, starting to think about what you might want to do? As an assistant coach, that my job is to make the head coaches job easier, make, make things, make things, take things off their plate, take things off their desk, like make, if theres something had to be done, as an assistant, like just make, [00:39:00] make something easier for the head coach. It gets a little traveling trophy. To be able to do that. What were some of the first things that you said, I gotta get these things done if were going to be successful. And I really loved it. And you forget as an adult, youre like, why do you even care? I canceled my plane ticket. We dont need all guys who are foreign students. And now my brother, my brother, whos three years younger. So its not like I could wear it around campus and people would be like, Oh, look it, look at Mike hes part of the three 50 club, but yet I remember killing myself to get that thing and I still have it. I was a good player in high school in Iowa as a whole, you know, for an All-state player. "We take the tournament very seriously. 8. It was one thing to have a team its not, not performing on the court, but theyre good kids. Some guys just play. Tobin Anderson: [00:29:20] Yeah. And so it was awesome. More Alumni. And so I thought that was a good place for me to go and have a good career and meet some people. Dad is like, listen, like you, you know, before the days over, just come in and say, Hey, is there anything else coach I can do? We go five and one, all of a sudden people think Im think Im not perfect. I, you know, I played all the time. And we know that having coaches being able to work with players, you can help them improve and whatever. And in a lot of cases, it ends up maybe not being realistic for those players. What Ive been able to do is hire great assistant coaches who are kind of in my mold or really good with the guys on the floor. It was just, it was like for a basketball guy was pure basketball and this before all the crazy recruiting stuff was going on, it was still crazy. So I, I enjoy what I do and enjoy a coach. Fantasy. And I was not recruited at a high school. Tobin Anderson: [01:18:20] Yeah, we dont get, we dont get a ton of ad a division two. This the, the way that five star was set up, it was set up for basketball junkies, and it was set up for the time, the way the basketball [00:27:00] culture was during the era.
